Hillside’s Family Opportunity Centers, located in Syracuse and Rochester, assist participating families in overcoming challenges so they can heal and thrive in their communities. Participating families are often experiencing multiple stressors and find they could benefit from strength-based, culturally competent, trauma-informed and family-focused supports. Services are available to expectant parents, and families with children under age 21.

About this Program

This is a center-based program located in Monroe and Onondaga counties. Caregivers and their children are welcome to visit their local Family Opportunity Center, where they will work with a Hillside Family Peer Advocate and/or a Clinician, and to network with other families in the program. Families are welcome to drop in at the centers at any time during regular hours of operation.

In addition to providing a safe and secure location where families can come together, grow and learn, Family Opportunity Centers provide core services including:

  • Parent education opportunities including active parenting, support groups, and a variety of informational workshops that help increase social connections
  • Access to mental health services with an on-site clinician
  • Referrals to other community-based services including substance use treatment; mental health services; Women, Infant & Children (WIC) supports; domestic violence supports; food banks; SSI; day care; housing; employment opportunities; and recreational activities
  • Support that allows families to accomplish personal goals such as furthering their education and finding job/internship opportunities
  • Support for youth and families in achieving success in school, as needed
  • Monthly family activities offered on-site or in the community

A family’s engagement at a Hillside Family Opportunity Center is intended to help families build resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, concrete support in times of need, and the social and emotional competence of children.
