The Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged provided a “golden” opportunity for Hayley, a youth in residential treatment at Crestwood Children’s Center. Crestwood Teacher Michele Newell suggested that Hayley, who is visually impaired, participate in the games, which were held at the State University of New York at Brockport in October.

The event provided an Olympics-type experience for Hayley, starting with festive Opening Ceremonies with athletes carrying in a lighted torch. Two high school student volunteers from the Palmyra-Macedon School District were assigned as buddies to Hayley as she competed in the 100-meter dash, shot put, and discus events. “It was a great social experience for Hayley,” Michele says. Hayley also got a big boost to her self-esteem and a tremendous sense of accomplishment when she won gold medals in all three events.

Michele knows from personal experience how beneficial the games can be for youth. “My sister is blind and I got involved when she participated in the games,” she says. “I’ve been volunteering for the Empire State Games for about 25 years now. It’s a great opportunity for all the participants to see that other kids have disabilities, too.”

The 2011 Empire State Games have been canceled due to the state budget crisis, but Michele is hopeful they will be reinstated so that she can share the experience with other Crestwood youth.
