Support from a parent
liaison
Trained parent liaisons (local adoptive
parents) provide one to one advocacy and support services to
families. Parent liaisons have personal experience with adoption
and have first-hand knowledge of adoption-related issues and
community resources.

Skillbuilding
The Girls and Boys Town Skillbuilding
model teaches youth and parents coping skills such as anger
management techniques, peer/parent interaction skills,
communication skills, and parenting methods. Skillbuilding can
take place in different settings, including the school, home, or
community. Skillbuilding services are offered by sociotherapists
with the support of parent liaisons and are generally conducted
over a six-week period.
Search for birth families
Search services through Adoption
Resource Network at Hillside or by referral through the NYS
Adoption Information Registry.
Information and referral
Access to a knowledgeable and
understanding person to provide information, immediate support,
and referrals to community services. Hillside Children’s Center
offers a single point of contact at (585) 256-7967.
Parent support groups
Monthly support groups for adoptive and
pre-adoptive parents. Topics are chosen by participants and are
guided as necessary by Adoption Specialists. Locations are easily
accessible by public transportation. Through these support groups,
parents form friendships and support networks, so they no longer
need to rely on the “system.”
Youth support groups
Similar to parent support groups, but
targeted to adopted and pre-adoptive youth.
Crisis counseling
Families in crisis receive intensive
support, including four to six weeks of in-home crisis
intervention counseling services. A crisis counselor/social worker
from Hillside’s local Therapeutic Foster Care Team will provide
these crisis services in conjunction with the assigned Parent
Liaison and a skill builder. Crisis Counseling always includes the
development of a crisis plan with the family and child.
Just in Time
24/7 telephone access to trained
specialists in crisis situations. Includes referrals to intensive
crisis intervention services, if necessary.
Advocacy services
Provide telephone and in-person support
to help parents navigate the mental health and educational
systems.
Breathing Space respite
services
Provide parents a one-night or weekend
break during crisis situations. Respite services are time-limited
and only accessible during crises that could result in family
dissolution, disruption and/or a foster care placement. Children
are placed in a certified foster home during respite services.
