Janel Welch, a Registered Dietitian, is Assistant Food Service Director at Hillside Family of Agencies. She has an M.S. degree in food and nutrition service management from Rochester Institute of Technology and a B.S. in physical education from SUNY Brockport.

Sue Figaro Grace, a Registered Dietitian, is nutrition, health and food safety program leader for the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County. She has an M.S. degree in community health education from SUNY Brockport and a B.S. in food and nutrition management from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Laura Fasano is Director of Program Development for the YMCA of Greater Rochester. She is leading the YMCA’s pilot CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) program, which incorporates the recommended amount of daily exercise into the YMCA’s existing programs for children. She has a B.S. in exercise science from Springfield College.

 

 Making "Mom and Dad" Time
  Dan Mason, General Manager of the Rochester Red Wings, is a husband and father of two young children. His demanding schedule during the baseball season forces him to find creative ways to stay close to his family and keep the spark in his marriage.

Anthony R. Pisani, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and faculty member in Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. His specialty areas include family therapy, child and pediatric psychology, and primary care psychology. Dr. Pisani has a special interest in helping families experiencing stress due to changes in family structure, child behavior problems, medical illness, and life stage changes. His primary clinical practice is located at Strong Family Therapy Services
in Rochester.

Don Johnson is president and owner of Town & Country Travel, a Pittsford, NY-based travel agency specializing in international travel for business and leisure clients across the United States. He is a frequent guest travel expert on local television and a travel advisor for leading publications. He has also served as a member of international travel advisory board. Extensive travel with his wife and two daughters has made him an expert in planning romantic getaways for couples, family vacations, and trips that combine both.

 

 Better Safe Than Sorry
  Nancy Warburton is health educator for the Finger Lakes Regional Poison and Drug Information Center. She develops and implements public and consumer poison prevention education programs across the Center’s twelve-county region. She has a B.S. degree in nursing from the University of Rochester’s School of Nursing.

Melanie Wood is a legal assistant at Moran & Kufta. She works with Nancy Moran on the firm’s "Kids Are Special" program to provide Safety ID cards for area children. She graduated from Buffalo State College with a concentration in broadcasting.

Al Odorczyk has been a firefighter for the Gates Fire District for 19 years and is also responsible for their Fire Safety Education program. He works with students and staff of the Gates-Chili Central School District, as well as businesses, industry and community groups to deliver fire prevention education. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from S.U.N.Y. Brockport.

Pam Weaver is coordinator of community education for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). NCMEC offers a range of services and education programs for parents and children.

 

 Handling Tough Economic Times
  Peter C. Pecor, Regional Administrator for the Finger Lakes Region of the New York State Department of Labor, has worked extensively in the corporate banking industry, commercial business development and as a business consultant. He also served as a member of the Monroe County Legislature where he chaired the Planning and Economic Development Committee. He has a BS in Industrial and Labor Relations/Business Administration from LeMoyne College in Syracuse NY.

Carol Silver Elliott, president and CEO of Career Development Services, has more than 20 years’ experience in management, marketing and public speaking.  She is a graduate of Ithaca College, Cornell University and Central Michigan University. She is a member of TEC, an international organization of CEOs, and also holds leadership positions on several local agency boards of directors.  Her monthly column, CareerWise, is published in the Rochester Business Journal.

George Heurring is the former owner of a successful engineering firm who thought his engineering and business degrees made him "economically invincible." When his clients’ business declined, George’s engineering firm closed and he was forced to make a career change. Becoming a technology teacher has brought him unexpected rewards and has changed his definition of success.

Chad Rieflin is Education Chairman for the Credit Education Bureau, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to aggressively reach out to consumers with important credit information and good money management training. The Bureau educates consumers through a speakers bureau, information hotline, radio show, resource library, television media campaign and much more. Educational programs are available to k-12 schools, colleges/universities, churches, neighborhood centers, area employers, and community organizations.

Elizabeth Thorley is a Financial Advisor and Owner of Crossbridge Financial Group, LLC. She is a Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Life Underwriter. She hosts "Financial Week in Review," a biweekly radio show, and guests on "Financial Fitness," a weekly television show. She earned her B.A. degree in Economics and Public Affairs at the University of Denver.

 

 Not My Kid
  David Koon - Following the abduction and kidnapping of his daughter Jennifer in 1993, David Koon ran for and was elected to the New York State Assembly representing the 135th District. He has been a strong advocate for peace and legislation to reduce crime and protect children, including the Amber Alert notification program and enhanced 911 services.

Sally Berry is Program Director for the Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance, where she coordinates group tour programs and educational initiatives such as the Tourism Institute and helps to leverage tourism partnerships throughout the region. She is currently working on a Masters Degree in Tourism Management from Rochester Institute of Technology and serves on the Steering committee for the Visitor Industry Council of the Greater Rochester Visitors Association.

Terry Slaybaugh, Director of the Monroe County Department of Aviation, oversees the operation and development of the Greater Rochester International Airport. One of his primary goals has been to bring low fare carriers to the Rochester airport. Mr. Slaybaugh holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Urban and Environmental Planning from Grand Valley State College in Allendale, Michigan.

 

 Step Families
  Heather Sprague, Ph.D. is a New York State-licensed psychologist. She serves in Emergency Services at Hillside Children’s Center, where she treats children ages 5 to 18. Heather received her doctoral degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio with a concentration in child, adolescent and family studies. She completed her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center Department of Psychiatry.  

Tom and Nan head a blended family with children from both of their previous marriages. Molly is Tom’s daughter. 

Diane and Ken also head a blended family with children from both of their previous marriages.

 
 Oh Brother!
  Dr. Candace Sorensen is a psychologist at Hillside Children's Center's Residential Treatment Center, where she provides group and individual therapy and psychological assessments to children and adolescents. She has a 
Ph.D. from the University of Denver. She did a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Psychology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. 

Jennifer, Andrea and Jason are adult siblings whose relationship has changed as they’ve grown, moved, pursued careers, and begun to raise their own families. 

Fraternal twins Kathryn and Jennifer are high school students making plans for college and careers. Their mother Linda joins them for this interview.

 

 A Day in the Life: Not Your Mother's High School Anymore
  Laurie Platt is assistant principal at Odyssey School in Greece.  She is the supervisor for the Math, Science, Technology and Business Departments and the grade level AP for students in 8th, 9th and 12th grade.  Previously, she taught Math and Physics for the Victor School District for 17 years.  She has a B.S. Degree from SUNY Geneseo in Physics, a Master of Science Degree from the University of Rochester in Mathematics Education, and a Certificate of Advanced Study from SUNY Oswego in Educational Administration.

Ted Mancini is chair of the Theatre/Communications Department at Aquinas Institute. He did his undergraduate work in theatre at the State University of New York College at Cortland and graduate work in Catholic School Administration at the Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester.

Victoria Best is a youth advocate at Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, where she helps high school students to succeed in school and prepare for employment and college.  

Samantha Holmes is a senior at Rochester’s School of the Arts and a participant in Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection.

Judy Zeeman Golden is manager/mentor of Hillside Children’s Center’s School-Based Solutions program, which supports students with emotional and behavioral challenges and allows them to remain in their home school. She has a Masters in Social Work from Syracuse University and a Masters in Science Teaching in Environmental Studies from Antioch New England.

 

 Sandwiched In
  Sandra Schencke is Senior Eldercare Specialist at Eldersource, a collaborative of Catholic Family Center and LIFESPAN. The program provides Care Management Services, consultations, assessments and information on community resources for transportation, housing, meals, health insurance, benefits, caregiver support, respite mental health counseling and a variety of home care services. She has a Bachelor of Social Work from Nazareth College.  

Felice Armignacco is a member of the Board of Directors of Mercy Center With the Aging. She is the past Director of Nursing Services for the County Health Department. She is a graduate of St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Rochester School of Nursing. 

Dorothy Elia is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who recently moved from her long-time family home to be closer to her family. 

Marie Aydelotte, M.D., is board certified in internal medicine, geriatric medicine and palliative care. She has been Medical Director at St. John’s Home, a 475-bed nursing facility, since 1996. She is a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. 

Robert Malley, CLTC, is President of Comprehensive Capital Resources. He is Certified in Long-Term Care and specializes in helping clients protect, accumulate and preserve wealth. 

Paul Martin is an attorney specializing in Elder Law.

 

 Sugar & Spice vs. Frogs & Snails
  Dr. Caroline Richards joined Hillside Children's Center in 1999 as a psychologist for residential treatment facilities. Dr. Richards also has a private practice, in which she provides diagnostic evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents in a primary care setting. She is currently an adjunct Senior Instructor of Psychology at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Dr. Richards has been published in psychology journals and given numerous presentations, research, and teachings in her field. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Richards is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Rochester Area Group Psychotherapy Society. 

Sheila Roman is the mother of a son and a daughter. 

Fran Barr is past principal of St. John of Rochester School and Rochester Leadership Academy. She received her School Administration certification from the University of Rochester, in Rochester, New York. She received her Masters degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Brockport, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education at the College of Mt. St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio. 

Ann Sartwell is Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley, a council chartered to deliver Girl Scouting to five counties in western New York State.  Prior to accepting the leadership position at Genesee Valley in April of 2001, she was the Executive Director of Girl Scouts of Mississippi Valley for 11 years. Ms. Sartwell graduated from Eastern Illinois University, and began her Girl Scout career in central Illinois
