Marsha Tette, Behavioral Specialist, Hillside's Halpern Education Center: Marsha has more than 22 years of special ed experience. She works with children aged 6 through 18 on development of social skills and strategies for making positive choices and solving problems.

Katy offers training and consulting on bullying and violence prevention in schools, girl bullying and sexual harassment prevention. She is currently writing a Resource Guide for the New York State Department of Education on Parent Involvement in Education.

 

 Finance 101 for Families
 

Maggie Ridge is a financial consultant for AXA Advisors. She is expert in a variety of areas, including mutual funds, annuities, life insurance, 529 plans and long term care insurance. She teaches a class entitled “Toddlers, Teens and Tweens – How to Teach Your Kids About Money.”

Lilly Fursman is Business Development Specialist at Family First Federal Credit Union. Family First offers a unique program – Scottie Savers – that encourages children to develop the lifelong habit of saving money. 

Frederick (Fritz) Minges is Vice President of Clover Capital Management. He studied economics at Hamilton College and received an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.

 

 Who's Minding the Child?
  Anne Leone is Work Life Services Director at the Child Care Council, Inc. The Council maintains a database of child care providers in the Rochester area and helps parents find child care services to meet their needs. 

Kathy Majewski is a nursery school teacher who also provides day care for her grandchildren two days a week. 

Susan Cinquino is Director of The Children’s Center of Brighton, a family owned and operated child care center. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Education, and has been working in the field of Education for more than 20 years. 

Mickey Beikirch is Executive Director of Westside Family YMCA. She earned her Masters in Elementary Physical Education from SUNY Brockport.  

Tamara Pineda is Staff Development Specialist at Park Ridge Child Care Center and Unity Child Care Center, where she provides training and support for staff. She has more than 15 years of experience in early childhood education. 

Kristine Huff provides child care services from her home. She has a B.S. in Elementary Education and has worked as a program director at TOT-AL Care Day Care Center and Lakeside Child Development Center.

 

 The Power of Pets
  Alice Calabrese Smith is Executive Vice President of the Humane Society of Rochester at Lollypop Farm. Lollypop Farm has a wide variety of animals available for adoption and provides education programs on the responsibilities of pet ownership. 

Susan McDougal is a Pet Therapist at Crestwood Children’s Center. She is a charter member of the Upstate Kennel Club, an instructor for the Dog Obedience Training Club of Rochester and a Licensed Team Evaluator for the Delta Society. 

Marcia Cloen is Animal Assisted Therapy Program Coordinator/Consultant for the Western New York Developmental Disabilities Services Office. She also provides animal assisted therapy through her own business, Heart to Heart by Marcy. 

Dr. Susan Cousins is a Veterinarian with Perinton Veterinary Hospital. She received her DVM from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed her internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the prestigious Animal Medical Center in New York City.

 

 Positive Partnerships
 
Kara Stadt started a summer day camp to help her son and other children suffering from skin diseases. She has also worked with her son's school to educate the staff, teachers and students about skin diseases.

Marjorie Vandenburg is President of the Genesee Valley PTA and an advocate of parental involvement in our schools.

Sally Bohne is Community Relations Manager for Hillside Family of Agencies. She coordinates the Parents as Partners initiative to make the Hillside culture sensitive and responsive to the needs of parents and families.

Jackie Benjamin was a founding member of Hillside's Parents as Partners initiative and remains active as a parents advisor.

Fran Barr is Principal of Rochester Leadership Academy, a charter school that encourages strong parental involvement in education.

Rick Piacintini is father of four young athletes and a high school basketball coach.

Linda Pickering is an elementary school teacher in the Victor, NY School District. She has a B.A. from SUNY Geneseo and a Master's from Nazareth. She has been nominated three times to "Who's Who Among American Teachers."

Katy Ozminkowski teaches at Rochester Museum and Science Center's Summer Fun Camp program. These week-long camps help to engage children in science, while exposing them to a variety of science career opportunities.

Rosemarie Law represents Huntington Learning Centers, where children gain the skills, confidence and motivation to achieve in school. Huntington's summer programs can help children acquire the math, writing and study skills they need to get a great start on the next school year.

Matthew Riek coordinates the Rochester Scholars and Taste of College programs for the University of Rochester. These programs expose middle and high school students to new areas of learning on the U of R campus.
 
 Twelve Going on Twenty-Six
 
Tom Proietti is Professor of Communication at Monroe Community College and a former advertising and cable TV executive. He founded the Communication/Journalism Program at St. John Fisher College, where he taught for ten years. He is a graduate of the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University, where he received his MS in Radio/TV/Film. He is also a former radio, TV and newspaper journalist.

Dr. Candace Sorensen is a psychologist at Hillside Children's Center's Residential Treatment Center, where she provides group and individual therapy and psychological assessments to children and adolescents. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Denver. She did a Postdoctoral Fellowship in
Pediatric Psychology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

  Dean Ashby is a Therapist at Transitions, Therapy for Growth and Positive Change. He has a Masters of Social Work from Syracuse University, and a Master of Public Administration from SUNY Brockport. 

Judy Allen is a Therapist at Transitions, Therapy for Growth and Positive Change. She received a Masters of Social Work from Syracuse University. She also serves as a Law Guardian for the Legal Aid Society. 

Sara Finiki and Neil Pawlowski are students at the University of Rochester and work on the Orientation Program for incoming freshman and parents. 

Becky is the mother of two children, a son who is entering college, and a daughter who is entering first grade. 

Cindy is a mother whose son has returned home to live – this time, with a toddler of his own.

 

 And Baby Makes Three
  Elizabeth Cooper, Certified Nurse-Midwife, is director of the Strong Health Midwifery Group. She received her nursing degree from the University of Texas, Austin and Galveston, her Masters in Nurse-Midwifery from Columbia University and her Ed.D. from the University of Rochester. She is Associate Professor of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Nursing at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Rachel Phelps, MD is a clinician in women's reproductive health at Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region. She is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and completed her residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in women's reproductive health at the University of Rochester.

Nine Morris is Director of Educational Programs at ViaHealth. She received a nursing degree at Syracuse University and is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology's MBA program.

Lisa, adoptive mother-to-be, is awaiting the arrival of her first child from China.

Cindy is the mother of a daughter conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF). She and her husband are preparing to undergo IVF again to conceive a second child.

 

 Foster Parenting 101
  Joe Gabryel is Supervisor of the Homefinding Unit for Erie County Department of Social Services. He participates in both regional and national collaboratives to determine best practices in foster parent recruitment and retention.

Diana Fegley
is Foster Care/Adoption Supervisor for Seneca Department of Human Services. She has also served as a caseworker in Child Protective Services.

Bev Tomaszewski
is a Foster/Adoptive Family Specialist at Hillside Children's Center, Monroe Region. An adopted child herself, Bev is the foster/adoptive parent of four children and biological parent of three.

Terry
has been foster parent to fourteen Erie County children.

Doug Merritt
is Community Services Manager for Hillside Children's Center, Central Region, where he develops foster parent recruitment strategies and assists with foster parent recruitment efforts.

 

 The Dating Game
  Heather Jewell, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who received her doctoral degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio with a concentration in child, adolescent, and family studies. She completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship at University of Rochester Medical Center in the Department of Psychiatry. She is currently employed at Hillside Children’s Center as the psychologist for Short-Term Residential Services and provides treatment to children ages 5 to 18 and consultation to team members. Dr. Jewell also co-facilitates group therapy and coordinates the group program for Horton Family Center and the Emergency group homes.

Diane is the mother of seven children ages 15 to 28.

Andrea McMullin has been a counselor in the Rape Crisis Service of Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region since 1996, providing crisis intervention and counseling services to victims of sexual assault and their loved ones. She also conducts professional and community education and training programs about the issue of sexual assault. She has also worked in the Counseling Department of Planned Parenthood as a Senior Counselor.

Marcia Betlem is Resident Director at SUNY College at Brockport, where she serves on the Student Unwanted Sexual Experience Team. She has extensive experience as a rape crisis counselor. She has Masters degrees in Business Administration and Education.

 

 Raising A Child With Disabilities
  Kathy Giordano is Coordinator of the Advocacy Center’s Independent Parent Advocacy Network and Tourette Advocacy and Support programs. She also serves as an Advocacy Specialist for the National Tourette Syndrome Association.

Kathy McCarthy-Proulx is an advocate and trainer at The Advocacy Center. She works with families of children with disabilities to help them advocate on their own.

Pat Graff is the mother of two children. Her son Cooper has Down Syndrome.

Teena Fitzroy is Family Information Specialist at Monroe BOCES #1. Teena was born with cerebral palsy and fought for the rights to go to college, learn to drive, marry, have children, and many other things denied to people with disabilities in previous years. She now helps children with disabilities to receive a quality education in the public schools.

Dan Lisinski is Associate Leader for Services to support individuals with developmental disabilities for Hillside Children’s Center. He is also an instructor at the University of Buffalo. He has a Masters degree from the University of Rochester. He has worked with people with disabilities for more than 20 years.

Mike Staino is Supervisor for Home and Community Based Development Disabilities Services at Hillside Children’s Center. He is Project Manager for Res Hab services and is helping to develop new community based services for children with disabilities. He as B.S. degrees from SUNY Brockport in Sociology and Criminal Justice.
