Hillside Family of Agencies to add 100+ jobs, $5.1 million to upstate economy

Nonprofit to open new services in region by summer's end

Hillside Family of Agencies has announced that it will offer new services, add 123 positions, and infuse $5.1 million in total compensation to the region’s economy by the end of this summer. The expansion is part of an effort by the nonprofit organization to better serve the critical needs of the area’s youth and families.

According Hillside Family of Agencies Chief Operating Officer Clyde Comstock, “this service expansion brings in funding from national and local foundations, and returns state dollars to our area, all building on regional support for services that improve our community and provide critical jobs that support the improvement of our economy.”

Over $500,000 of the salary impact will come from the 14 employees Hillside is currently in the process of hiring for its new Gaining Resiliency through Overall Wellness (GROW) residential program at Hillside Children’s Center’s (HCC) Finger Lakes Campus in Auburn. These employees will work with young women ages 12 to 18 who have suffered significant trauma. The Hillside GROW program is one of the first gender-specific residential treatment programs in the Syracuse/Central New York region.

“We’re on the leading edge of what is becoming a national trend toward gender-specific treatment. We worked closely with referral sources, parents, and young women to develop the GROW program. We built the program around the needs they identified, and we have very high expectations for positive outcomes,” said Alison Clemett, Hillside Children’s Center Central Region service leader.

According to Clemett, one of the goals of the GROW program is to help participants develop a network of at least two supportive adults, as well as community resources for ongoing healthcare and education. Mentors from the community are being recruited to provide continuing support and guidance.

Hillside will also be opening an Intensive Support Unit and two Independent Residential Alternatives (IRA), or group homes, in the Greater Rochester region. These new services will add 64 new positions and over $1.6 million in compensation. Additionally, Hillside will add 13 new positions at its Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection affiliate; 28 in its education services; and four to its administrative staff.

“The growth at Hillside represents opportunity, in that there are more jobs available for our neighbors and friends and opportunity for more children and families to be served. Hillside is a stable and growing organization where our staff members not only have jobs, but have a career,” said Frank Kaiser, Hillside Family of Agencies chief organizational development and human resources officer.
