Two
Hillside Children's Center employees are the first in Upstate New
York to attain Postgraduate certification in adoption therapy.
Lisa Maynard,
Adoption Resource Network at Hillside Children's Center
Executive Director, and Mike Carroll, Hillside Children's Center
Central Region
Foster Care/Adoption Manager were among the first 16 people to
graduate from the 10-month program offered by Hunter College's
School of Social Work in New York City.
The certificate program utilizes various
teaching methods to help mental health professionals develop the
clinical sensitivity and competency needed to assist children being
raised by a family other than their birth family. Participants were
also trained in dealing with mental health and other life challenges
children face as they live and grow as a part of an adoptive family.
"I participated in the program to
increase my knowledge and understanding of the core issues of
adoption," says Maynard.
For Carroll, who is transitioning into a
new role in Hillside's Central Region service territory, the
certification brings credibility to his ability to achieve the
objectives of his new position.
"The goal would be to help move the
region towards more competency in adoption related matters," says
Carroll.
The Postgraduate Certificate Program in
Adoption Therapy is offered through a partnership of the New York
State office of Children and Families, the Hunter College School of
Social Work, and the Center for Family Connections.
