In an effort to raise community awareness of adoption issues and to point more families toward the path of adoption, Adoption Resource Network at Hillside Children’s Center (ARN at HCC) is proud to announce that as a part of ARN at HCC’s Shoe on the Move Tour 2006, the one-of-a-kind Shoe Project Sculpture is making a stop in Palmyra for the Wayne County Fair, August 14 to 19.
“By exhibiting the Shoe Project Sculpture at public venues such as the Wayne County Fair, Adoption Resource Network at Hillside Children's Center is working to help each waiting child find a permanent, safe, and loving home with a family to call their own–where they can put their shoes each night, where they can begin to believe in permanence, and where they can learn to believe in themselves,” says Lisa Maynard, Adoption Resource Network at Hillside Children’s Center executive director.
According to Maynard, in 2004 almost 2,000 pairs of shoes were collected–one pair representing each child awaiting a family in New York. They were then lined on the sidewalks and hallways of the site of Adoption Resource Network’s annual conference. In 2005, ARN at HCC commissioned two Rochester-area artists and residents at Artisan Works to create a permanent sculpture using the shoes that were collected.
“It is a powerful, emotional visual aimed at raising community awareness about adoption and foster care. Constructed of shoes in the shape of a house, the sculpture implores families to bring a child into their home,” says Maynard.
At each stop it has made during the tour this summer, the Shoe Project Sculpture has been captivating passers-by, and it is not too late to bring the Shoe and its awareness-raising message about adoption and the more than 2,000 New York children awaiting permanent, safe, and loving homes to your location.
