Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection was recognized on September 18 at an awards ceremony held by the United States Department of Labor and the National Youth Employment Coalition (NYEC) in Washington, D.C. A program proven to help youth at risk for dropping out of school to succeed in school, at home, and at work, Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection was singled out as a PEPNet (Promising and Effective Practices Network) honoree among peer programs across the nation for demonstrating effectiveness in preparing youth for careers and independent learning.
United States Representative Louise Slaughter attended the ceremony with other representatives from whose communities the 27 honored initiatives originated. Executive Director Annette Gantt, Manager Conda Barron, and program participant Letitia Bell accepted the award on behalf of Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection.
"Being one of 27 programs across the country to receive the award is a significant accomplishment," says Annette Gantt. "Recognition provides a platform for advocacy with policy makers, funders, and other providers."
To receive the recognition, Hillside Work-Scholarship went through a rigorous application and review process in which it had to demonstrate effectiveness in management, youth development, preparation of youth for career success, and soundness in data evaluating results.
Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection is an affiliate of Hillside Family of Agencies, a nonprofit organization, also comprised of Crestwood Children’s Center, Crestwood Children’s Foundation, Hillside Children’s Center, and Hillside Children’s Foundation, that provides youth development, mental health, child welfare, juvenile justice, developmental disabilities, and special education services to children and families throughout Western and Central New York.
