Domestic violence affects thousands of families in the Rochester community. Nearly 8,000 people called Alternatives for Battered Women's hotline last year, a six percent increase from the previous year.
"Domestic violence is the community’s responsibility. Behind all the numbers are children and families who are suffering. It is important that we provide the education and access to resources these families need to find help," says Dennis Richardson, President and CEO, Hillside Family of Agencies, which serves nearly 1,000 children a year who are victims of abuse.
A local television program premiering next week will explain what constitutes domestic violence, who is affected, how it can be prevented, how to get help, and what resources are available in our community. "Today's Family: Fearing the One You Love," co-produced by Hillside Family of Agencies and WROC News 8 Now and sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of the Rochester Area, will air Friday, June 14, 2002 from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. on WROC News 8 Now.
Hosted by Kevin Doran and Maureen McGuire, the program will feature local interviews, including perspectives from police, healthcare agencies, and the court system. In addition, a panel discussion on domestic violence will highlight community experts from Alternatives for Battered Women, Hillside Children's Center, and University at Buffalo Law School.
An on-line chat hosted on www.hillside.com will immediately follow the broadcast on June 14, beginning at 9:00 p.m. Viewers will be able to ask questions of and receive answers from guests on the program.
"Fearing the One You Love" is the second program in the series "Today's Family," developed to increase awareness about critical issues affecting New York State families. A third "Today's Family" installment is under development and planned for broadcast later this year.
Hillside Family of Agencies provides youth development, mental health, child welfare, juvenile justice, developmental disabilities, and special education services to children and families throughout Western and Central New York.
